Tips for busy Moms to stay focused on God
Rise before the kids
If you google, “verses about the morning” you will quickly realize how much God likes the early hours of the day. There are countless verses that declare God’s availability to us in the morning. Just as he walked with Adam in the cool of the day, the Lord hopes to see us with an open ear in the “garden” each morning.
Proverbs 31 speaks of the wise woman who rises before anyone in her house. This passage speaks of a believer who knows the importance of being the first to “awaken.” To set the tone and the atmosphere of the home, we must be the first to arise to the occasion so to speak. Rising before your kids gives you the chance to set the tone.
Having even just 30 minutes each morning before the kids rise will center your day greatly. As moms, we hit the ground running once the kids rise. Breakfast, chores, clean up, getting dressed…once it starts, its doesn’t stop!
Have quiet time
Having a fresh word from God everyday is so life giving that it will soon become a necessity. Jesus is bread and water- our spirts true diet. We can only go so long without the essentials for life. As a mom, we care for the needs of others so often that we absolutely need to make sure we are coming to God so he can care for us.
Daily quiet time is the number one thing for anyone who wants to keep their focus on the Lord all day. You can return to that sweet time in your heart and mind through out your day. It’s amazing how God will speak, teach, and love you in ways only He can when we give our mornings to spend time with him.
Plus you are setting an amazing example for your kids. Displaying that seeking God is your first choice each and every day will produce a peaceable fruit later on. It takes discipline, but when we realize what awaits us in those early mornings, missing God’s precious presence is not worth staying in bed.
Create a schedule to take the guess work out
Feeling overwhelmed is the easiest way to loose focus on the peace you have in God. We have much to attend to as mothers and that isn’t going to change anytime soon. Having a schedule that you tentatively live by will remove the guess work and need to think on the spot. This might have worked for you before kids but once those little gifts start talking and asking questions, they’ll want to direct the day for you. You must stay ahead of the game by have a schedule that everyone can count on.
We don’t have to be strict or religious about a schedule either, of course. I always want to be open for God to say, “Do this in this way today!” And I’m ready and willing to shift. OR recognize my kids need something other than what we typically do according to the schedule.
The purpose of a schedule is to help you be organized, productive, and peaceful as you go about your daily tasks. Check out my post all about how to create a simple, clear, and do-able schedule! Click HERE to read!
Care for your husbands needs
Nurturing our children is instinctual and natural but we need not forget our hard working husbands! However best fits your family, your lifestyle, and schedule make sure you are caring for your husbands. Wives are called to love and honor their husbands as the church honors Christ.
When your kids see how you honor your husband, it will mark them for life. The word says, we know that we love God by our love for our brother. Your kids are less capable of being compared to a “brother” than your husband because he is an imperfect man where your kids are innocent and helpless. Loving and caring for him shouldn’t based upon his performance either, but on your call to love and serve like Christ. We must do all things as unto God and not for man.
If you want to focus on God all day, loving and caring for your husband is a great way to keep your priories in order.
Play worship all day everyday
The effect worship has in your home might be bigger than you realize. I will often hear my kids singing worship songs because they hear it playing in our kitchen, literally all day everyday, (I was in Spotify’s top 1% of listeners and its because we always have worship on)
Not only will it fill the atmosphere with heaven but you’ll have the opportunity to turn your heart in love and affection each time your ears hear a line or melody that moves your spirit.
Pray in the spirit
Praying in the spirit is literally a GIFT from God. When you don’t know what to pray, pray in the spirit! Are you kidding me? This is such a special and powerful gift from God. SO often I don’t know what to pray! I have so many thoughts, feelings, and emotions. I need God to help me figure out how to pray. He gave us the gift of tongues for that. Paul said he prayed in tongues more that anyone and I’d call that- GOALS.
Pray in the spirit as you clean, as you fold, or as you cook! Who knows what kind of amazing things your spirit is crying out for. Plus it keeps us in prayer continually, which scripture says to do!
Memorize scripture with your kids
Memorizing scripture has as powerful of an effect on your brain as learning a new language or an instrument. Gods word is sharper than a two edged sword that cuts right to the soul and spirit.
Using notecards to recite and memorize scripture with your kids will be the most uplifting experience! We follow the Charlotte mason method for memorizing verses because it’s very simple and effective.
We don’t want to just KNOW verses, we want to have them implant life into our being. When you memorize verses, mediate on them too. Think about them on purpose 3x a day. Try to understand them better by deeper thought and by asking God to give you insight into their meanings. Thinking about His word is a beautiful way to keep your focus on the Lord. If you haven’t fallen in love with his Word, you will soon enough if you start memorizing it!
Jesus said you search the scriptures, because in them you think they have eternal life, but I AM the life! Remember, we want to memorize scripture so we can know Jesus even more!
Here’s the easiest way to memorize scriptures
- Write your favorite verses on flash cards
- Put them in a card holder
- Pull 1-2 out everyday and say them 3x with your kids
- Repeat daily!
Speak kind words often
Proverbs 16:24 “Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healthy for the body,”
Worried about the health of your family? Start speaking kind words more often to them. In order to speak kindly, we need to think kindly. They only real way to think that way is to have a mind stayed on God. As you focus your heart and mind in prayer, start asking God for kind words that can heal!
Your speech will have much to do with how you focus, so speak life! This is really going to help you keep your focus on the Lord throughout your day.
Serve others with a happy attitude
Christ was the servant of all. If he, being God’s Son came to serve and not to be serve, how much more should we be inclined to serve. As mothers, wives, homemakers and all things of the sort, we are servants.
Many Moms on social media have made careers out of complaining about it while others have large followings because they have embraced it. Let us be the ones who know that serving is a sign that we are God’s. We shouldn’t despise the work but see each thing as a precious act of worship unto a worthy God.
Our work and service in the home is very much serving “in private”. We aren’t receiving awards, promotions or pay raises when we excel at our jobs. Our confidence, strength, and joy come from knowing God is smiling on us. This alone is the only “promotion” that really matters in this life. Scripture says, “God loves a cheerful giver.”
Your happy attitude in the midst of serving will keep your heart and mind in a great place to keep your focus on the Lord.
“God loves a cheerful giver”
2 Corinthians 9:8
Make gratitude lists
You probably have to do lists but do you have gratitude lists? Even secular physiologists recommend making lists of things you’re grateful for as a step out of depressing thoughts. Keeping our focus on the Lord is only going to last if we do it His way. Scripture says we enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise.
If you want to be a walking sanctuary for the Holy Spirit you need to stir your heart in gratitude. Make lists as often as you need of things you are grateful for. Read them aloud to your family or post them on the fridge so the entire family can join in this heartbeat.
Pray for booboos first
Our first impulse needs to be to go to God first in everything! If your child comes to you with a booboo or a problem of any kind, always bring God into the equation. Pray for their booboo or ask them to pray themselves. You’ll be amazed how quickly your kids will take ownership of this and begin to pray on their own. I love to walk in on one of my kids praying to God for something they want or are thinking about.
What we want is to cultivate an atmosphere where God is the center of our homes. He is the essence and the reason. I have a post all about how to encourage your kids to encounter God that speaks more in depth on this point! Check it out HERE.
“…and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
Deuteronomy 6:7
Make a prophetic word file bin
You’re going to get prophetic words for yourself, your family as a unit, and your kids will start to get them, possibly even before they are born. Do yourself and your family a SOLID and make a file bin with every word you get! This will bless your family beyond measure. My in-laws have done this and it has helped my husband and I tremendously in our transition times in life.
- create a bin specifically for prophecies
- Make a file for each person in the family
- Write down any prophetic word, dreams, encounters, etc and file it asap!
- Make copies and give it to your kids when they need it / when they grow up
Do everything without complaining
Complaining is the #1 way to get your focus OFF the Lord, Complaining is a wet blanket on a flame.
They murmured in their tents, and did not obey the voice of the LORD.
Psalm 106:25
Complaining will lead to disobedience. If you do it, your kids will do it. Stop that cycle and do not complain! No matter how bad you might have it, there is always reason to give thanks. We all go through very difficult times in life, scripture promises we will. What matters is how we walk those times out and what becomes of us as we do.
Put care into your appearance
Of course, what we look like does not matter to God so caring for your appearance is not to make God happy. Caring for your appearance is a way to display the care and attention you give to the work the Lord has given you to do. If you were a lawyer, you wouldn’t show up without a clean face, brushed mouth, and the appropriate attire.
We must be sure we are not believing any lies that whisper insignificance into our viewpoint on ourselves. If we care about our work, it will show in all we do. Caring for your appearance is an indication that you are excited about your life, you enjoy what you do, and you are wanting to succeed!
- maintain good hygene
- keep your hair neat
- Don’t wear pajamas all day everyday
Go check out my post on how to look pretty with minimal effort because us moms are very busy and we can’t spend too much time on our appearance!
Seek counsel
When Jesus called disciples, he called 12. When God sent the Holy Spirit it fell and created a community. When we become parents, we should not do it alone. There will be immeasurable encouragement you’ll receive if you have older moms who are believers that you can turn to for advice and counsel. There is actual comfort released when we receive counsel from our elders.
When you seek counsel, if it’s from chosen Godly people, it will always empower and encourage your focus on the Lord. If you don’t have this, pray and ask God to send the right people for the task. He is faithful and He will do it!
Give freely
What freedom for the man (or mom) whose life in not their own! We are free to live and give all we are! Hold nothing back from your family and the people God has put in your life.
I bet when your outlook starts to get muddy, you’re probably looking inward and becoming hesitant to give. If you recommit to the vows you made in marriage and to God, you’ll remember that you said you’d give it all.
“But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first!”
Revelation 2:4
Giving isn’t just your service either. Its your hugs and kisses, you heart open to theirs, your ears open to needs. Giving is the essence of love. God gave His son, remember that.
Invest in spiritual teachings and books
Invest in your spiritual health. You’d buy supplements for your health so do it for your spirit! There are incredible recourses out there for us to glean from. Here are some of my favorites.
- Books associated with your home church
- First Fruits of Zion (solid messianic teaching)
- Lance Wallnau
- Art scroll books (rabbinic writings) *very fun reads but must use discernment, as always.
- John and Lisa Bevere
- C.S. Lewis
- Bill Johnson
Have friends that build you up
Our parents always told us to choose friends wisely. That advice still rings true into adulthood. Who you surrounds yourself with is who you become. There are even studies that show, the top 5 people in your friend circle will affect your income potential.
How much more spiritually should we watch over who we allow to influence us?
“Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
1 corinthains 15:33
Avoid strife and seek peace
If you’re wanting to keep your focus on the Lord, it’s best to seek peace in your home. Starting fights or feeding into them will make it so much harder to cultivate a place of worship and love. Avoid fights and pursue peace in your home.
“The beginning of strife is like letting out water,
proverbs 17:14
So abandon the quarrel before it breaks out.”
Receive encouragement from the word of God
Even if all the strength you have is to choose one verse and focus on it, that one verse is enough. God’s word has power to strengthen us.
God will encourage you through his word by speaking to you through it. Gods word is living and active. Choose to believe and act on what it says! Don’t just the a reader of the word but a DO-ER!
When I got saved I found out very quickly that my bible was like an actual person. I could go to it when I needed help, love, comfort, encouragement and advice. Treat your bible like your therapist and turn to it as much as you need. I know it has everything you need!
Always put God first
“I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread.”
Job 23:12
In your life, can you honestly say you treasure God more than bread? More than anything you think you need…a new house, another baby, more money, a new job…you need God. God is the answer. If you want to have your focus on the Lord and not be pulled away by everything life demands of us moms, you need to put God first!
When we come to God, he always has open arms. But he does require us to have Him be our God above all else. Life has a way of constantly tugging and pulling for our hearts attention. To succeed, we must truly serve and love God above everything else,
Hold your tongue
As mothers and wives, we are overseers of the home. We have the opportunity to build it up, or tear it down. Where does that begin and end? With out mouths! The Bible is FULL of wisdom on how to speak and how NOT to speak.
A wise women will hold her tongue often. Not just with her husband but with her kids, her friends, and in her everyday interactions. Taming your tongue is a daunting task indeed, but we can do anything with God. Be very careful to hold you tongue in your home. Whatever you say, it can never be taken back!
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Ephesian 4:29
Care for your home as if it was a temple
Just as we talked about in caring for your appearance, caring for your home displays your decision to thrive in your position as mom, wife, and homemaker.
If you were given the task of caring for the home of a loved one, would you treat it better or worse than you do your own? Take ownership over the beauty of you house. It truly is a sanctuary for your whole family.
How you cultivate your space is an indication of your heart. Put all you are into making your home a special dwelling place for God and his people.
“…some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it”
hebrews 13:2
Have an overcoming attitude
Being a mom alone calls for courage but being a Christ like one calls for much, much more. To pick up a cross and follow Jesus everyday is not for the fainthearted. We must engage with the Christ in us and gain an overcoming spirit.
We must get to a place where we quickly recognize thoughts that are not coming from our renewed minds, take them captive and make them obedient to Christ!
You have everything it takes to be a good mom AND a lover of God. The two do not clash, they join harmoniously. To stay focused on the Lord will only make you a better, stronger mom. But we have got to have a grit about us in the process. If we fail, we get back up. When we are feeling weak, Christ is strong. Times life is hard, we are stronger than the pain.
Believe you were designed for this! Be ready for whatever life throws your way and be ready to do it with excellence! You have GOT this!! Don’t be a quitter, be a winner!
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”
1 corinthians 9:24
Rebuke fear
Anxiety, fear, and depression are plaguing our generation like wind jackets plagued the 80s!
All jokes aside, we could find a new reason to fear everyday if we allowed it. We must not be this way. Isaiah says a mind stayed on God is kept in perfect peace and that is our portion. Do not allow fear into your life in any measure! Rebuke the fearful thoughts and maintain the peace that is yours in Christ!
“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.”
proverbs 31:25
Pay attention to your dreams
Lastly, a fun and unique way to focus on the Lord is to start paying attention to your dreams. Psalm 16:7 says, I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.”
Perhaps God has been giving you a repetitive dream. Start to pray and search God’s word for the meaning in your dreams.
Pay attention to your kids dreams as well. God is always speaking and we have the privilege of seeking it out.
Proverbs 25:2
“It is the glory of God to conceal a thing, but the honor of kings is to search out a matter.”
Staying focused on the Lord as a busy mom is not impossible, in fact there is a world of opportunity for the Lord to use everything we go through in this season to encounter us and to teach us who he is. We have an immense privilege of being called Mom, but even more than that we are called God’s very own child. Let us not forget to live up to the high calling of being Christ’s own special possession!
Keeping your focus on the Lord might not come easy but as you fall deeper in love with God, his ways, his word and his spirit you will become transformed in ways you can’t imagine!
These are my top 26 tips guaranteed to keep your focus on the Lord.
