Merriam- Websters definition of pick me:
Pick-me (or pick me) is a slang term for a person, usually a young woman, seen as behaving in a contemptible way for attention and approval, usually from male peers.
More generally, pick-me can refer to anyone thought to be trying too hard to earn acceptance.
Pick me’s weakness
Now, I have witnessed the cringe of these types of people, and I myself have at times been a pick me girl.
I actually have seen everyone I know display the desire to be chosen in many different ways, at many different times.
It’s understandable that one would deny completely their relation with this apparent flaw,
totally understandable.
We all cringe at the way that looks.
When someone is desperate, hungry, and openly begging for approval.
It’s so much stronger to appear without the need to be wanted.
Completely sufficient and satisfied with oneself.
But we are lairs if we pretend the pain of rejection has never touched us.
I argue that, indeed, if we are not healed of rejection, we will lock up and deadbolt the door to our need to be chosen.
We will label that ugly passageway, “WEAKNESS”
And later, when we witness someone with that door flung wide open, a shiver will run down our spine.
And all along, the very structure with which we were designed, has “CHOSEN” woven deeply into the coding.
In the Messiah he chose us in love before the creation of the universe to be holy and without defect in his presence.Ephesian 1:4
Who will he choose?
I have a vice.
Reality dating shows. I cannot get enough.
Every season of Love in Blind- Ive seen it. In every language.
(not proud of that)
BUT, I believe this show and ones like it, i.e.- The Bachelor, Love Island, and the like…
all do so incredibly well based off this concept.
In all of these shows, we are witnessing the process of someone being chosen.
Deep inside, we all crave to be “the one.”
The most beautiful. The most talented. The most unique. The most capable. The one that is worthy to be chosen.
You are her
My belief is that you are.
You are that one to God.
“…unique is my beloved dove—unrivaled in beauty, without equal, beyond compare, the perfect one, the favorite one….”
Song of Solomon 6:9
When you meet a person who has touched this truth, you have met someone that is free.
They are not afraid to admit, “I need to be reminded of God’s obsession of me.”
They recognize when their need to be chosen starts to wander into strange territory.
They return over and over to their creator and ask him, “with what kind of love do you love me? Show me again.”
They are a pick me. They LOVE the truth that they have been picked. Chosen. Single out.
Chosen Ones
Think about Zacchaeus.
He chose to be unashamed of His desire to see Yeshua. And he was picked.
2 A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus…He wanted to see who Jesus was…..4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-figtree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. 5 When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.”
Or the women with the issue of blood.
She had enough of what everyone else said she SHOULD do, and went after touching him. She too, was chosen.
27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.
There are countless examples in scripture where the ones who let go of their dignity and admitted their need for God, were quickly, measurably, and remarkably- chosen.
David- who would dance unreservedly in worship was chosen to be king.
The prodigal son- was chosen for restoration, regardless of how significantly he dismissed his father’s value.
Hannah- praying so intensely that she was accused of drunkenness- was chosen to mother Samuel.
The woman with the alabaster jar- was chosen to prepare Jesus for his burial because of her shameless offering.
Every time needs to be touched
Every time you are rejected-
even in small ways…
your father brushing you off,
online trolls comment something derogatory,
even middle school drama which we thought we moved past.
It’s all kept score somewhere in your sub conscience.
We need to ask God to speak to us and tell us what he says about these exact moments.
“You are clean because of the word I have spoken to you.”
John 15:3
It is His words which will wash us from these stains.
His words of affirmation, acceptance, and adoration.
Yes, God adores you.
And you should LOVE to picked. You are picked by Him,
Stay happy.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you,
before you were born I set you apart;Jeremiah 1:5
