Use this simple and effective guide to get your homeschool booty into shape fast!
Here’s how to get fit fast for summer as a stay at home mom!
Replace sugary snacks with fruit
We all know by now that sugar is addictive…but do most of us care? Not enough to cut it completely. So instead, REPLACE refined sugar with natural ones that have countless benefits! Fruit is amazing for your skin because it full of antioxidants. Fruit has natural carbs that will give you the energy boost for your HIIT walk everyday. Try eating half a banana 20 minutes before a long walk and tell me you don’t feel the pep in your step!
Fruits to replace sugary treats
- strawberries with a drizzle of honey
- frozen green grapes
- blueberries with a tiny handful of shaved almonds
- microwaved apples with cinnamon
- watermelon with Tajin

Minimum 10k steps
Walking is the most realistic “workout” for a mom who is chasing kids around all day. It’s not hard at all for stay at home moms to hit 10k steps. Aim for 5k more than what’s normal for you! It’s all about making small increases to our calorie expenditure to see the extra fat fall off before summer!
Make evening walks a family venture. It doesn’t have to be a HIIT workout by any means because the more you walk during the day the greater your NEAT operates for you– Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis ( the calories your body burns walking around, homeschooling chores, standing, fidgeting, cleaning, etc.)

Sweaty HIIT walk 2-5x week
A sweaty HIIT-style walking workout just twice a week can be a powerful tool for fat loss, especially for homeschooling moms with limited time.
This kind of training helps preserve lean muscle, which keeps your metabolism strong as you lose fat. It also improves insulin sensitivity, making it easier for your body to use fuel efficiently rather than store it. When done a couple times a week, HIIT walking delivers big benefits without overwhelming your schedule or your nervous system.
Do not avoid the incline option ladies. You can burn over twice the amount of calories walking at a 5% incline vs 0% (flat) walking the same distance.
There are tons of affordable walking pads on Amazon or check your local Facebook market for a used treadmill. I don’t have either so I get my outdoor walks in daily!
The 12-3-30 method BLEW up because it is truly effective. (12 incline, 3 speed, 30 minutes on a treadmill) Try this method or a variation to get in shape fast.
“The art of walking is the art of thinking, and the art of thinking is best done with shoes on and the world at your feet.” – Adapted from William Wordsworth reflections on nature
Strength training or Pilates 3x a week
The best way to get fit fast is to start strength training. 3 times a week for 30 minutes is enough to shed fat for summer. Of courser you can always do more that 3 days a week, but do whatever your going to stick to.
Finding an app or a method you enjoy is going to be huge for sticking out a workout routine. I love Witney Simmons Alive App. The workouts are very straightforward and effective. Her app includes a timer and keeps track of every workout you do!
For pilates I watch free videos on Youtube by Move with Nicole. She is absolutely incredible at keeping your breath work aligned with every single move, instructing beginners and experts alike, and her simple aesthetic is super peaceful.
Here is a list of a few apps to consider.
- Alive app- $15/month
- Peloton- Free, $13 or 24 mo depending
- Second Interval Timer (for HIIT workouts) free
- Nike Training Club Free
Increasing the amount of muscle in your body is going to do the absolute most when it comes to burning fat. Muscle takes more energy to maintain than fat so the more muscle you have= the more calories you burn NEAT- (Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis)

Use your hand as a portion guide
Portion control can be simple—even on busy homeschool days—if you use your hand as a guide.
- Protein = palm
- veggies = both fists
- carbs = cupped hand
- fats = thumb
- fruit = one fist
Your hand naturally scales to your body, so you don’t need a scale or measuring cups. This method makes healthy eating quick, practical, and stress-free, even while teaching, cooking, or running errands at home. Over time, it becomes second nature, helping you stay on track with fat loss while still feeding your family.
Load on the greens
There are so many rules when it comes to food and weight loss—but with veggies, there is absolutely no limit.
Adding more greens means increasing volume without adding many calories, which naturally supports fat loss without restriction. Leafy greens help stabilize blood sugar, improve digestion, and keep you fuller longer—key factors when your days are long and meals are often interrupted as homeschooling Moms.
They also support your body’s natural detox pathways and hormones, which play a quiet but important role in how efficiently you burn fat. Think of greens not as another rule to follow, but as a grace-filled tool that nourishes your body while you faithfully care for your family.

Stay consistent
Consistency isn’t built on motivation—it’s built on grace-filled rhythms. You have to turn the dial in your life until you find the beat that you can stick with.
Start by choosing habits that fit your real life, not your ideal one, and anchor them to things you already do each day. When you miss a day, don’t quit—simply return, because faithfulness is shown in coming back again and again.
Small, repeated choices compound over time far more than occasional bursts of intensity. Stay consistent by aiming for progress, not perfection, and trusting that steady obedience brings fruit in its proper season.
Have a joyful attitude
Psalm 16:11 – “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”
When you start living healthier, something amazing happens: you naturally become more alive thruought mundane, more engaged in routine, and more present in the familiar. Instead of just watching life pass by, suddenly, you have energy and motivation to do things you’d let slide before—journaling like you’ve always wanted, calling distant family, organizing the junk drawer, or simply savoring the quiet moments.
Healthy habits don’t just change your body; they awaken your spirit and soul to fully step into the life you’re already living. Joy becomes both the fuel and the reward, turning daily care for yourself into a celebration of life.
Maybe the reward isn’t fitting into our old shorts, but in finding a romantic spark in our structured homeschooling days, and feeling overwhelming thankfulness at what we are capable of achieving in a day.
“The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.” – William M. Lewis, Modern Reflections
Know your TDEE & Be at a slight calorie deficit
Eating at a calorie deficit is the cornerstone of fat loss, but it doesn’t have to feel restrictive or complicated—especially for busy homeschooling moms.
The idea is simple: consume slightly fewer calories than your body burns each day, and your body will tap into stored fat for energy. Done mindfully, a deficit fuels steady fat loss while still keeping you energized for your family and daily tasks.
Helpful tips to make it easier:
- Focus on high-volume, low-calorie foods
- Include lean protein at every meal to preserve muscle and keep hunger in check.
- Track portions loosely
- Don’t skip meals—steady energy helps prevent overeating later in the day.
- Allow flexible treats so your plan is sustainable and doesn’t feel like punishment.
Calculating your daily calorie deficit starts with knowing your TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure)—the total number of calories your body burns in a day, including movement, chores, and exercise. Use ChatGBT to find your TDEE within a few minutes and you have the ultimate key to fat loss….take that number and subtract 250–500 calories per day, which leads to gradual fat loss without feeling deprived.
Replace after dinner sweets with tea
We know it isn’t hunger that drives us to that after dinner cereal bowl once we’re make up free and braless. It’s a reward system inside our brilliant brains telling us we have something to look forward to.
Train your sweet but often bossy brian that you will now be looking forward to a lovely glass of tea each night,
Make it a special ritual. Buy a new a lovely mug just for this. Truly, losing weight is so extremely physiological and tricking (or mastering) the mind will make this journey much easier than a restricting mindset that often leads to failure.
Cutting your evening sugar addiction with this simple tip will have you summer ready and benefit your health longterm. Sugar before bed disrupts sleep which inhibits weightless more than anything, so don’t skip this item!

Talk text your food log into ChatGBT
Keeping a food log cannot be complicated for busy homeschooling moms if its going to be realistic…
You can simply text or type your meals into ChatGPT each day, and it will track your calories and macros for you.
No apps, no spreadsheets, no exact weighing—just a quick, conversational way to stay mindful of what you’re eating. This loose tracking method helps you see patterns, adjust portions, and stay on track with your fat loss goals without feeling restricted. It’s fast, flexible, and works perfectly around a busy homeschool schedule.
This is a game changer for food mindfulness. I learn so much about food simply by using Chat as a food diary.
